What People Are Saying
"The Master gives himself up
to whatever the moment brings...
no illusions in his mind,
no resistances in his body.
He doesn't think about his actions;
they flow from the core of his being."

-- The Tao te Ching
(Book of Changes)

Dealing with the Downturn-- Creating Change from Challenge!

EveThe title of this piece is what I called the class I was going to give at Elephant alternative shopping and learning center this month in Berkeley, California just prior to the store closing. In my e-bulletin last month, I wrote about the profound sense of loss of community that many of us in the San Francisco area felt with the financial collapse of Elephant. With the current economic downturn, these types of closures are becoming more common but still deeply felt. They play into a larger sense of personal and societal change, angst, and loss-- of our jobs, of our sense of financial security, of familiar stores and other physical landmarks-- and even more profoundly, within ourselves-- of our inner sense of security and connection to who we are.

I recently interviewed a number of people and asked what the word "change" meant to them. The responses varied as widely as: "Change is hard," "Going towards something by giving up something else," "Doing things I never thought I could," "Excitement!", "I love change that I choose!" Clearly, there are many perspectives on what change can mean in a person's life. As a life coach who helps people create changes they want, as well as manage enforced changes effectively, I'm paying attention to how some people are learning to choose change that they want just as the economic crisis is shaking up parts of their lives they thought secure.

I just read in a local newspaper an inspiring story about a retired woman who did exactly this-- used the diminishment of her financial savings as an opportunity to live the life she wanted. First, she tried to find part-time jobs to supplement her income. When nothing happened, she reached a turning point, the moment when "she realized what she really wanted to do was pursue a long-deferred dream"-- to paint and sell her artwork. Suddenly, her seeming obstacle became the doorway to living fulfilled. Basically, she learned to shift her inner perspective from "I am being taken over by events beyond my control" to "I am in charge of creating a new way of living that has purpose and meaning for me."

I am really curious as to what kind of support this woman had for making the turnaround in her attitude and gaining confidence in choosing her path in the world. In my experience, rarely does a person create such a change in direction without support from family, friends, colleagues, a counselor, a spiritual guide, a coach-- and more likely, a combination of these. As you can imagine, I would love to have been this woman's coach and to have championed her courageous leap towards fulfillment in the face of adversity. Fortunately, I am able to help people who are equally passionate about creating opportunities for living authentically and well use difficult situations as motivation to go for what they really want.

If you are interested in skilled support for creating positive change-- professional and personal-- in your life now, please call or email me for a free consultation and sample coaching session. With warm wishes for fulfilled living--

"You base your life on having a certain amount of money, but then the world turns upside down . . . I started looking for part-time bookkeeping jobs to bring in extra cash . . . Then I decided to pursue my painting, and see if I can sell my art . . . I think the bookkeeper thing was out of fear, and painting is out of hope . . . I'm actually feeling excited. People always say to focus on what you love doing. Maybe the economic downturn can prompt some positive things."
