Living on Purpose, Living Well!
You may have heard or read a lot recently about having a "purpose" for your life. What does this mean exactly? Tim Kelly, who coaches business executives and national leaders in finding their life purpose, gives this very practical definition: "At its heart, your purpose is a navigational instrument. When facing a decision, a clear understanding of your purpose tells you which way to go in order to derive the greatest positive impact for yourself and others."
In my experience as a motivational life coach, people seek their life purpose in order to live more joyfully, more effectively, and with greater satisfaction. A life lived on purpose has three key aspects-- (1) a positive intention for how to live or what you are here to do; (2) a feedback loop for measuring how well you are living with this intention; and (3) a positive change in life quality while living with this intention. Living on purpose affects the whole nature of your life as well as your relationship to others in it. It is both a conscious understanding of why you are in the world and a compass for guiding you further in this direction.
In my own life, for example, I spent the first fifteen years after college working at jobs or following career paths based on what I or others felt I was "qualified" to do because of my education and experience. During that whole time, I did not know how to articulate my life purpose-- and, so, of course, I didn't know how to align this purpose with my work. Therefore, I kept following job and career paths in which, though I did well, I also felt limited in terms of my satisfaction level. This left me with the sense that I would never find "right livelihood" for myself-- work that I was meant to do with passion and commitment, that had the potential to evolve and extend through the rest of my life.
Finally, in my late thirties, in my quest for healing, I met key people who introduced me to a totally different realm-- that of spirituality, energetic awareness, and body-mind healing. Intuitively, I knew that this was the area in which my own life purpose-- helping people who yearn for passionate connection find the courage to live authentically-- could manifest a professional direction that was deeply satisfying and inspiring.
A few years ago, I discovered life coaching. Because I now understood my life purpose, I entered into the training with great enthusiasm, as it so clearly integrated with and expanded the foundations of my now-fulfilling professional life.
If you feel resonance with my story, here are some questions for you: Do you have a clear sense yet of your own purpose for living? What makes you wake up in the morning with excitement and alert to possibilities? How do you feel that you make a difference? What do you offer of value-- through your work? with others? for the planet? with your spirit?
These are some of the issues that I help people explore with coaching and body therapy as they are going through career, relationship, and spiritual transitions. If you are interested in learning how to live purposefully and well, contact me at eve@kailaslifecoaching.com or 888-714-7068 (toll-free) for a free consultation. With warm wishes, Eve
"That hidden depth of strength in his weakness, revealed to her hitherto only by a chance attitude, had now taken possession of his whole personality. She had not seen him when he had fought for the life of Captain O'Hara and Nat . . . She did not understand at all that in the saving of life this man fulfilled the purpose of his birth; she only knew that in William at this moment she had more than met her match......"
-- from Green Dolphin Country by Elizabeth Goudge

Tips for Beginning to Live on Purpose:As you respond to the following questions, be aware of their impact on you (some may have more than others). Each of them is designed to call forth something that you find vital to living well in your life. 1) Think of three people you have known personally or through history, literature, or family lore who have inspired you. What are their qualities that you admire? In what ways have you learned from them? 2) Consider what things are most important to you. Are they present in your life now? 3) What do you contribute that is unique? 4) What is something essential about who you are?

This is an area for you to share thoughts, feelings, and/or offer new information to other readers about anything that spoke to you from my previous month's Changing Your Life newsletters. I really appreciate Linda LaRosa taking time from her busy life to email her personal reflections below:
"I LOVE reading your newsletters . . . so inspiring and encouraging! I especially enjoyed hearing in more detail in your September '08 issue about your biking trip and experience. Recently turning 60, I feel sometimes like I have to prove how "young" I still am . . . and find it defeating and demoralizing. Then I end up hurting myself by pushing too hard. Your article makes me realize that a challenging experience can be worthwhile by learning to let go of the internal pressure and ENJOY the moment."
