What People Are Saying
|
"Vital engagement does
not reside in the person or in the environment . . . Just as plants need
sun, water, and good soil to thrive, people need love, work, and connection to
something larger. It is worth striving to get the right relationships
between yourself and others, between yourself and your work, and between
yourself and something larger than yourself. If you get these relationships
right, a sense of purpose and meaning will emerge."
-- Jonathan Haidt, from The
Happiness Hypothesis

What Is It to Work and
Live with Engagement and Heart?
Can you imagine what it
would be like to be highly successful in your career and in your life? If
you are reading this article, I assume you're having questions about how to
pull it all together-- how to bring your professional interests and skills into
a direction that feels alive, flowing, and connected with something vital and
meaningful within yourself.
In his book, The
Happiness Hypothesis, psychologist Jonathan Haidt refers to psychologist
researcher, Mihalyi Csikszentmilhalyi-- creator of the concept of "flow"-- and his study of successful scientists and artists.
As Haidt says, "His interviews shared that every path is unique, yet most of
them led in the same direction: from initial interest and enjoyment, with moments
of flow, through a relationship to people, practices, and values that deepened
over many years thereby enabling even larger periods of flow . . . This
deepening process [he] . . . called 'vital engagement.'"
It is this quality of "vital engagement" that
everybody experiences who works at what they love or to which, at least, they
can bring their passion for something important in their life.
Unfortunately, a recent Gallup poll indicated that of those polled "74% of the
workforce is not engaged with their work." So what does this mean for you
if you're in a transitional place in your career? From a life coaching
perspective, you have a tremendous opportunity to align your personal values
(what you feel gives your life meaning) with activity in the world that
supports this sense of fulfillment.
In a recent class I gave I coached a woman who
wanted to change the focus of her work and use her professional skills in
administering organizations focused on world health care rather than financial
profit margins. When she began her career, shortly after receiving her
MBA degree, she wanted immediate work experience and wasn't sure of her inner
direction.
Now, five years later, she felt unfulfilled--
not with her profession per se, but with whom she was serving and the purpose
of her work. In our coaching, I asked her to tell me her top three
personal values, which were "service to others," "community," and
"self-expression." Her current position, she realized, offered her little
scope for living out these values. She decided to interview for several
positions that seemed more in alignment with her passion for promoting health
care internationally. She has now accepted one of these and is excited
about this new opportunity to "passionately engage" with her work-- and thereby
feel an increasing sense of connection between what she does for a living and
her personal relationships and interests.
If you want to live with heart and engagement in
your work and your life, discover for yourself how coaching can be a powerful
experience for creating positive change. Try a 30-minute free coaching
session with me about any aspect of your current life/career transition, and
feel the opening that can happen for you! You can also take my new group coaching tele-class
starting in September (see below for details). This is a great way to get started making the change you most want now at a third of my usual coaching fee.
With best wishes for living passionately
engaged,

TipsFor Growing Your Life Living with Heart and Engagement |
|
- Let yourself sit in a way that's comfortable for you. Follow your breathing for several breaths until you feel at ease within yourself. Close your eyes and visualize yourself in a place that expresses just how you would like to live. Notice who is there with you, what you are seeing, and what you are feeling. Listen quietly for the message from your heart and what you want to do. Bring this message back with you when you open your eyes.
- Take the online positive psychology Signature Strengths test at http://tinyurl.com/5pyg72. Find a relaxing place to be, then register for free (hit the register button) and fill out the VIA Signature Strengths assessment. Plan to spend 30 - 40 minutes responding to these questions that explore the 24 character strengths determined by positive psychologist Martin Seligman.
- You will receive almost instant feedback about your top 5 strengths, as well as the ranked listing of your 24 core strengths. Now look at your top 5 strengths. How do they align with the work that you do and the life you are living? What do they tell you about "the path with heart" that you would like to find or create personally and professionally in your life?
