What People Are Saying

"In her brief term as a mortal nurse, [earth goddess] Demeter . . . [shows] us that motherhood is about nurturing not only in human ways but also in divine ways . . . Good Demeter mothering keeps a child in the heat and passion of life which immortalize and establish soulfulness. Mothering involves not only physical survival and achievement-- Demeter's grain and fruit-- it is also concerned with guiding a child to his or her unknown depths...."

Championed to Be Your Best!
Think about it-- who has been there for you in your life? Which person or people have supported you fully in going for your dream, for something you really wanted, something that seemed almost impossible to achieve? For my husband, William, it was his history teacher in his senior year in high school in small-town Washington, Pennsylvania, who insisted that William fulfill his dream of going to college-- the first person in his family to do so. No one in his family or among his friends really understood the value of a college education in terms of broadening opportunities for a career, travel, and expanding his horizons. William still cherishes the memory of Harry Murray, who made him fill out college applications and take this giant leap forward into the unknown that made such a profound difference in his life.
How does this connect with coaching? One of the first things I learned in my coaching certification training was that you can only work successfully with people whom you can fully "champion." Since a major role of a life coach is to hold a client's biggest picture of herself to grow into, the coach must feel aligned with this person and trust that she has a strong enough desire to move forward in a way that has meaning for her. To do this requires creating a safe space where the client can also trust that her coach will listen without judgement or bias to the goals to which she aspires. A young woman I'm working with, for instance, who wants to make a major career shift from video technician to university professor told me, "I can say things to you that I can't even say to myself about what I really want to achieve." In other words, the client must feel that her coach is fully supportive of a process that will lead to success.
What I look for as a coach is how my client's energy or enthusiasm rises when he speaks of what he really wants to create or make happen. At the beginning, a person may not have a clear vision of what he wants. He may only know that he seems to be stuck in an unrewarding style of living, working, or being in relationship. Or he may want to make a specific change, but fears that it may be impossible for him to achieve this. A number of people have said to me hesitantly at the beginning of coaching, "Please let me know if my goal is unrealistic. I'm not sure I can make this happen." This is where a coach can really come forward for clients-- by believing fully that they are creative, resilient, and committed to changing the quality of their lives. A good coach will not just hold the client's vision for them. She also will help them clarify and deepen the meaning of this dream or goal, which may lead to expanding or shifting the focus. Most importantly, the person will feel himself heard and allowed to direct his actions into what is meaningful to his life.
I still feel the heartwarming quality I experienced when my current marketing coach and mentor, Steve Mitten (former president of the International Coaching Federation), told me that he knew my quality as a coach and said, "I know you will succeed." I'm empowered by the confidence he holds for me because it resonates with what I know about myself and what I offer as a professional.
Now I'm seeing examples of this championing and empowering in many places. Most recently, I saw it in the new Star Trek movie where the crew of the starship Enterprise in the 23rd century are just beginning to know how they can depend on each other. In a breathtaking scene, Mr. Spock is about to launch on a solo rescue mission and tells James Kirk, the fledgling captain, that there's only a 4.3% chance the mission will succeed. Kirk replies, "It will work." Spock tries to give a final farewell speech, and Kirk interrupts him with a smile, "It will work!" Which is the essence of why Kirk becomes captain of the Enterprise-- because, knowing the mettle of his crew, he holds the vision for them that they will succeed.

Tips for Growing Your Life
|
|
Article Subheading
- Take some time out to sip a cup of tea and notice the quality of the day around you. Enjoy something lovely in nature that attracts you. Then ask yourself, "What is it to be championed?" Listen deep within you for what you know.
- Notice if you were happy to wake up this morning, ready to engage in work and activities with heart and meaning for you. If yes, who champions you in doing what you love? If no, what support do you need to choose what you really want to be doing?
- Consider several people you admire because they've lived fully with engagement, enjoyment, and purpose. Who were their champions? Who believed in them and their dreams, and gave them the confidence to go forward into rich and meaningful lives?
