The Coach's Corner
|
|
In this issue, I'd like to acknowledge the role of my parents in helping me-- and the many, many people they worked with over their long professional lives-- develop fulfilling lives and careers. Most importantly for me, they were strong role models of the value
of leading a good life by choosing work and developing relationships that they enjoyed profoundly and with which they could change and grow throughout their lives. As a career & life transitions coach, I work with many people who want to clarify what is truly important to them so they can make effective choices about what they really want to do, and the type of life they wish to live. In some cases, they've had to stand up to family expectations that were not their own, particularly when changing career paths. Other times, some of my clients have found unexpected support from their families during challenging times, including layoffs, that gave them more hope and energy for pursuing their new paths.
For example, my father, Bernard Siegel, was an anthropologist at Stanford University for almost 40 years. He started as an undergraduate at Harvard University intending to be a doctor, even though the sight of blood made him queasy. Fortunately for him and the medical profession, a favorite professor introduced him to the very new field of anthropology, in which he could combine his love for language and history with new growth areas of world travel, cross-cultural explorations, and mentoring students.
His cultured, immigrant family expected that he would become a doctor, and it was hard for my dad to have to tell his father that he wanted instead to become a professor in a completely unknown field. Fortunately for him, his father replied that the most important thing was to be happy in his life and work, and gave him his blessing to go forward.
My mother, Charlotte Siegel, was just as fortunate in finding a rewarding career path early-- as a social worker (and later as a licensed psychotherapist)-- which she still continues to practice in her later life. Her most recent project is leading a Transitions group at her retirement center for people who want support dealing with issues around aging.
Unlike my father, she did not have the family blessing to go to graduate school. She did, ultimately, get her Master of Social Work degree, but had to fight her immigrant mother's more traditional desire for her to become a secretary in a medical office and marry a doctor-- the acme then of status and financial security. (As a side note, her mother was later very proud of mom's professional success.)
Because I grew up with parents who loved their careers, I took in by osmosis the value of having a profession that was meaningful and fulfilling. Though life coaching was not a defined career path when I graduated from college, I can see that much of the work I've enjoyed has had the common theme of exploring career and other life transitions as opportunities for personal and spiritual growth that lead to broader, deeper, more powerful ways to work, relate, and become who you really wish to be.
Though my parents' careers and life styles starting in the 1950's were remarkably stable by today's more volatile standards, some of the same principles applied then for my parents as now for us in terms of making a major life transition: (1) Have a vision of what you want; (2) Know and commit to your values and your intention for action; (3) Plan your strategies for change based on these values; (4) Get the support you need to overcome inner and outer obstacles to success; (5) Learn from your failures as you create your success; and (6) Realize that career and life development is a lifelong process and full of unexpected changes.
If you're in the midst of a transition concerning your career path or the quality of your life and would like to know more about how coaching can help you move forward towards where you want to be, please contact me for a free consultation and sample coaching session. You CAN have the support you need to make the changes you want, so take this opportunity and move forward now! With heartfelt wishes,

Wisdom Tips from My Parents for Opening Your Life
|
|
From Charlotte:
- Keep on opening and growing until you're at least 90--and you don't have to stop then!
- Network, network, network! It's good to meet
people who know people who can help and guide you. And someday you can
pass on the favor to others.
- When you're preparing for a challenge, look
your best and prepare for the most positive outcome!
From Bernard:
- Wherever you go, pay attention. There are always people you can talk to and learn from.
- Be patient with yourself--you'll get tired of making the same mistakes eventually!
- If you are clear about your intention, you
will attract the opportunities you want and need.
