It's February again, with its early spring-time whisperings in California of plum blossoms and valentines.  So what has all this to do with life coaching and creating changes in your life?  What is it to blossom into something new with the power of the heart?

 

            I'm thinking about a client of mine whose most recent weekly email check-in to me was not about where he was with his computer art project or his transition into retirement.  It was about love.  He wrote:  "I sense that if I loved myself more, it would mean being more of a risk taker, more readily expansive, less automatically self-protective."

 

            Wow, he got it!  He really understood from deep inside himself that opening into his heart would allow his desire for change to flower and blossom.  I sensed that at some deep level he was ready to expand beyond the careful steps he'd been taking to keep his life in order.  He was ready to take a leap forward. 

 

            So at our next coaching session, I asked him, "What would it mean to risk opening your heart?"  His body tensed as if a shock wave had hit him.  I suggested that he bring his hand to his heart, breathe slowly in and out, and connect with the rhythm of his heart.  As his body relaxed, I asked him what he was afraid of in opening his heart.  "I could get hurt, it could be hard to handle.  Anything could happen."

 

            Anything could happen.  Chaos-- or love, joy, fulfillment.  Do you dare take the risk of opening so that you can fully live, breathe, and feel your purpose in being here on the planet? 

 

            During a recent Qi Gong (body-energy healing) workshop, Master Mingtong Gu told us, "There are many possibilities for fulfillment with this human experiment.  However, overprotecting yourself from life contracts your spirit and pulls you away from your energy."  With coaching, you learn to make choices that open your energy and guide you towards "a path with heart"-- one where what you choose to do is fully aligned  in purpose and compassion with who you are and how you feel.

 

            The challenge I gave my client was, "Take a risk!  Let your heart guide you as you choose to do something that makes you tremble inside.  Notice how this feels different from being led by your head.  Feel this power inside yourself, like a flower in bloom, and what it is opening in you to be and do."

 

            For my client, this is still a work in progress.  The outcome is yet unknown, but it is clear to me that he is ready to expand on a radical shift in his awareness of what is important to him now in the way he wants to live and work.  At its most powerful, coaching offers you the opportunity to align your desire for professional and/or personal change in your life with what is most profound and expansive within yourself.
